Protecting your investment is a wise idea...When regularly applied to leather, waterproofing treatment will offer substantial protection from the elements...Folks this is not necessarily going to make the shoe water proof buy any means, but certainly will extend your ride time. There are a ma riot of winter cycling shoes out there that are synthetics. Which means that in theory that they either should come pretreated or need to be pretreated. Bottom line if you ride in the cold.... winter shoes & even the addition of a shoe cover make sense. Again if the shoe in particular you are using is leather than be sure to regularly treat them with a Nikwax type product. Hope this helps..enjoy the ride
